It’s time to honor our unsung heroes who navigate patient transfers.

Every day, dedicated professionals in hospital transfer centers, coordination centers, and command centers ensure patients receive lifesaving care—often with little recognition. They identify the best possible hospital for each patient’s specific needs and then orchestrate a complex web of communication among doctors, house supervisors, unit nurses, emergency departments, and nearly every other department to arrange swift and safe transfers.

Over five million patients are transferred annually in the U.S. (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality), and each transfer depends on the dedication of these behind-the-scenes teams. From reducing wait times to improving continuity of care, they play a critical role in saving lives—yet they often go unrecognized.

We’re proposing Patient Transfer Tuesday, to be observed on the first Tuesday of March. Let this day serve as a tribute to these unsung heroes and the critical work they do in every corner of the healthcare system. By establishing Patient Transfer Tuesday as an officially recognized day, we can shine a spotlight on the lifesaving role these professionals play in patient care.
